Overnight the metal drops below dew point and condensate forms in the firebox. If the grill is covered while still warm, that moisture cannot leave.

It collects in three places, in this order: the burner tubes, where it rusts the ports from within and produces the classic cool section; the igniter and its ground path, where a film of moisture is enough to send the spark somewhere useless; and the valve stems, which stiffen and then seize.

None of that is visible with the hood open. The exterior can look immaculate.

Ignition on a grill is not ignition on a range

Outdoors, the spark has to jump the same gap in wind, with a burner that may be wet. A grill that lights on the second or third try is already telling you the electrode gap has opened up or the ground has corroded. Waiting until it stops entirely usually means the burner has gone too.

Flame lift, where the fire floats above the ports instead of sitting on them, is a pressure or orifice issue and gets checked at the regulator. Many outdoor installations here run propane from a buried or enclosed tank, and a regulator that has been through several summers is a legitimate suspect before any part of the grill is condemned.

Infrared sections and rotisseries

An infrared burner is a ceramic or metal emitter that must heat evenly to work at all. Patchy glow means blocked ports, a cracked emitter, or a gas supply that cannot keep up when the main burners are also running. It is a component that gets replaced rather than repaired, so it is worth confirming the supply first.

Rotisserie motors fail predictably in this climate. A motor that hums under load and turns freely with no load has usually lost its gear train to corrosion, and the bracket geometry gets checked at the same time, because a spit running out of true will kill a new motor as fast as it killed the old one.

What owners can do that genuinely helps

Two habits change the failure curve on a Clay County outdoor kitchen, and neither costs anything.

The first is running the grill hot for ten minutes at the end of a cook, lid down, then leaving it uncovered until the metal is cold. That drives moisture out of the firebox rather than sealing it in.

The second is checking the burner tubes twice a year with a light, from the underside where the ports actually are. Rust starts on the inside surface and is invisible from above until a whole section has gone cool. Catching it early turns a burner replacement into a cleaning.

If the grill has been unused through a wet season, do not simply light it. Look for nesting, look for insect blockage in the venturi tubes, and expect the first ignition to take longer than it should.
